Game Overview Choose a Role Each player selects a custom abolitionist role that gives you special benefits and abilities during the game. Step 1: Gain Funding and Conductor Tokens During the Planning Phase, each player may decide to pay for up to two action tokens from the token board. A token may only be taken if the player has enough money available, players may not give or lend money to each other. Since the game is cooperative, players may discuss strategies and offer suggestions. Step 2: Use tokens and Cards A conductor token allows a player to move a specified number of enslaved people. Funding tokens bring in crucially needed funds. Support tokens build the underground railroads infrastructure. And activating available historical actions, laws, or persons modify game play based on actual historical happenings. Step 3: Market Phase During the Market Phase, recaptured enslaved people are sold to the plantations in the south, bringing to light the economic and human brutality of the times. Through careful planning, fundraising, enacting laws, and supporting paths to freedom, players must help a number of enslaved people to freedom, before a set number are lost to the slavery systems of the time. Details of what actually happened in our history are brought to light - both the evil and the very good. This is a powerful teaching tool to make sure that we do not forget the sacrifices made by so many. We really enjoy co-operative games like this so we knew what we were getting ourselves into. Most of the Co-Op games we play tend to be in the fantasy genre so it was fun to try a game with a solid historical foundation and a powerful theme. The theme of the game is really what makes it so powerful and unique. As we played we felt ourselves really wrestling with how to save ALL the slaves. Each person playing the game felt strongly that we didn't want to sacrifice any slaves but the game forces you to be very strategic and there may be cases where you cannot save them all. In most games, you don't care as much about what you have to sacrifice (ie: potions, gold, etc.). The beauty of this theme is that you feel like an abolitionist and you want to save every person. It has a sense of realism that made the game a lot of fun and very compelling. The gameplay is balanced and fun, and quick to pick up. We have really enjoyed this game and would highly recommend it.
